One Book, One School, One Community:
IIS reads Three Cups of Tea
In the fall of 2009, a wonderful new (first year teacher!) mentioned that she was reading the book: Three Cups of Tea, and that someday she would like to do an all school reading of the book. Having heard about the book from another person who organized "One City, One Book" in Colorado, I said: "Let's do it!" We worked together to enroll other members of the school community in the idea, oredered one book for every MS and HS student and one picture book version for each ES classroom, and then that January we conducted an all school, month long
One Book, One School, One Community. We filled the month with activities to support the ideas in the book such as a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser with the service learning kids to raise money for Pennies for Peace. We served tea at lunch, had activity groups to discuss the book, invited a guest speaker, had mentoring reading sessions with the big and little kids, and invited parents to join in the book discussion groups. It was a great success, and something I would love to do again!
